Awaken Rainbow Bay

Awaken Rainbow Bay

With the iconic headland at its perimeter, Awaken Rainbow Bay extends its clifftop experience, with a design that deeply appreciates its coastal context. Diverging from a linear form, fluid horizontal elements emulate the unobstructed coastline, and the sculptural form blurs the line between balcony and beach, natural and built form.

With views over three beach fronts, Awaken Residences sits on an unrivalled site, delivered for our long-time client and developer S&S Projects. Over 12 levels, Awaken Residences occupies only one apartment per floor and a two-level penthouse; a total of nine luxury residences. Greenery flows down the building's façade, culminating in a landscaped recreation deck on Level 1 featuring a BBQ, dining room, pool, and steam room.

For us, the challenge was to ensure the site mirrored its coastal context but also provided a statement anchored by the beauty of its location. The result is a building inspired by organic forms, fluid horizontal elements and the notion of elegant simplicity.

Our design moves beyond materiality, using form to anchor it in the landscape.

The captivating building form immerses residents in the unique Rainbow Bay locality. Each apartment’s exclusive wrap-around balcony extends to the full floorplate of the building, emulating the headland’s clifftop streetscape view within each residence.

The building’s scalloped façade maximises the site’s vista of the New South Wales and Queensland peninsula while diffusing strong ocean winds with the north-east facing orientation.

Artistic expression of sun and surf, on the highest point of the southern coastline.

The building’s side core performs a double duty, protecting itself from the harsh afternoon sun and providing a 200m2 canvas at the building’s eastern façade. Australia’s most prominent contemporary artist practicing in the public realm, Lindy Lee, is behind the contemporary integrated art, which takes inspiration from the local landscape and surf culture.

“This has never been done on the Gold Coast on this scale before where the built form provides a blank canvas that will deliver a superb cultural focal point for the community to enjoy.”

- PAUL GEDOUN | DIRECTOR, S&S PROJECTS

The building’s cultural contribution is also bolstered by a reincarnation of Cafe Dbar, which originally sat on the development site. The much-loved local institution will place Awaken Residences at the heart of the community and its culture.
